The Office of Health Promotions, along with five student organizations, three community organizations and two university departments, has planned what will be the largest week of events the University has everseen for World AIDS Day. This week long programming, currently referred to as ‘World AIDS Week’, will actively engage students, faculty and staff through seven educational events.

Monday, November 28
Planet Aid Shoe and Clothing Drive

Planet Aid is nonprofit organization that collects donated clothing and shoes to protect the environment and support sustainable development in impoverished communities around the world. Planet Aid protects the environment and preserves our natural habitat by reducing the volume of textiles entering the solid waste stream, thereby saving on landfill space and reducing the emission of greenhouse gases.

Donation boxes for Planet Aid will be set up during World AIDS Week at the following sites on campus: DeWeese Health Center, Student Multicultural Center, Women’s Center and the University Library. For more information regarding Planet Aid visit www.planetaid.org.

Tuesday, November 29
‘Red Ribbon’ Day

Outreach information tables will be set up in the Kent Student Center from 11:00 a.m. – 2:00 p.m. Red ribbons will be handed out at the tables, along with a number of educational materials, risk reduction kits, promotional items and refreshments.

Wednesday, November 30
FREE and Confidential HIV Testing

University Health Services and the Office of Health Promotion will be hosting free and confidential HIV testing for students, faculty and staff. To schedule an appointment contact the Office of Health Promotions directly at 330.672.2320.

Thursday, December 1

Join Dr. Dianne L. Kerr at 7:00 p.m. in Cartwright Hall as she presents and educational keynote on HIV/AIDS and how it can affect us all.

“Significant progress has been made in reducing the number of new infection, accessing treatment, and reducing AIDS-related deaths and stigma, yet efforts must be sustained and scaled up or these accomplishments can be reversed.”

This presentation will educate you about the reality of HIV/AIDS around the world and inform you about how we can all contribute to the fight against AIDS.

Candlelight Vigil

Join student organizations for across Kent State after the keynote presentation for a candlelight vigil remembering lives lost to HIV/AIDS. The vigil, moving from Cartwright Hall to Risman Plaza, will include speakers from local organizations such as Townhall II and the Ryan White Project.

Friday, December 2
Brown Bag Luncheon with Dr. Dianne L. Kerr, PhD.

Women’s Center: 12:00 p.m. – 1:00 p.m.

After 30 years of the HIV/AIDS epedimic, the 2011 World AIDS Day Theme “Getting to Zero” highlights the possibilities of zero new HIV infections, zero discrimination, and zero AIDS-related deaths. This presentation will highlight the current status of AIDS worldwide and in theU.S. Participants will be given the opportunity to practice HIV prevention strategies with hands on activities in a casual atmosphere. Come get your questions answered and experience first-hand how we can “get to zero”.
